HRV vs. ERV - What's the Difference?

Modern building practices create homes that are incredibly well-insulated and airtight. While this has an outstanding impact on energy efficiency, the lack of fresh air infiltration can cause air quality and health issues for occupants in the home.

Heat and energy recovery ventilators are designed to deliver fresh air to and remove stale air from a home, all while retaining heat, saving energy, and maintaining desired humidity levels.

The primary difference between HRVs and ERVs is that HRVs transfer heat while ERVs transfer both heat and moisture.

An HRV draws in fresh air from the outside, transfers and heats it through a core in the center of the unit and brings it into the home.  At the same time, another vent is taking warm exhausted air from the inside, transferring it through the core, and pushing it outside.  According to the Home Ventilation Institute, HRVs have been more commonly used in homes where the primary concern is high humidity in winter.

An ERV works just like an HRV, but as the two airstreams cross in the core, heat and moisture levels from the outside air drop before being put into the home. The Home Ventilation Institute says ERVs are typically recommended for warmer, humid climates with longer cooling seasons.

When sized and selected properly, both HRVs and ERVs can be a great way to provide concise ventilation while also recovering heat and air-conditioning energy, helping to save money on energy bills.
